Junior Coaching Pathway

Our experienced LTA Coaching Team provides a safe, fun and informative environment for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy playing Tennis and receive their specialist tennis coaching for children according to age range.

We specialise in starting children on their tennis journey from as young as 2 ½ years of age and moving them on through our mini tennis red, mini orange, green and yellow stages.

All our tennis coaching for children classes follow a similar structure including warm up, ball skills (without racket), teaching point and drills, game play/match play.

The classes are designed using the appropriate ball and court size giving the player a chance to learn basic hand/eye co-ordination and racket skills.

Progress

By the time players reach Yellow stage, they will be able to score, rally from the baseline, come to the net, volley and serve.

Tennis Tots
(Age 2 ½ to 5 years)

Tots is for children aged 2 ½ to 5 years old and enables them to learn the basics and how to enjoy the game.

The coaching is done through a series of fun activities, based on the fundamental areas of balance, co-ordination, agility, movement, racket and ball skills as they begin on their tennis coaching for children pathway.

Mini Tennis Red
(Age 8 and under)

Mini Tennis Red is for players aged 8 and under.

It is played on small courts with short rackets and soft balls. The red level is just like the real game and gives players opportunities to have long rallies and play different types of shots.

Mini Tennis Orange
(Age 8 and 9)

Played with shorter rackets, softer balls and courts are bigger and wider than the red stage but still smaller than full-size tennis courts.

The next stage of learning allows players to develop a rounded game whilst learning a range of techniques and tactics.

Mini Tennis Green
(Age 9 and 10)

This level is played on a full size tennis court, with bigger rackets and balls which are a little softer than yellow balls.

It’s the next stage before moving on to full compression balls on a full sized court and helps players develop all aspects of their game via our tennis coaching for children programmes.

Yellow Ball
(Age 12 years upwards)

From about 11 years upwards children are coached with proper tennis balls on a full size court.

Maximum class size is 6 on one court, with lessons usually lasting one hour.

Children progress through different levels and there is a great deal of flexibility, allowing them to change groups if they progress at a different speed from others in the group.
